Background
This Drawing Pad was created through a collaboration between ITO BINDERY and TrashType, a New York–based design studio led by type designer Mark Johnson and illustrator/creative producer Liz Ryan. The project translates the playful, narrative-driven spirit of TrashType’s new typeface “GORP” into the tactile form of ITO BINDERY’s paper product. Its vivid neon colors embody the font’s imaginative and experimental energy.
About TrashType
TrashType is a Brooklyn-based creative studio exploring the intersection of typography, product, and illustration. Through its projects, the studio seeks new ways to tell stories through letterforms and material design. Led by Mark Johnson and Liz Ryan, TrashType bridges design and storytelling, creating expressive, narrative-driven works that merge playfulness with precision.
About GORP
GORP stands for “Glyphs Optimized for Reading Properly,” a typeface designed for long- form reading. Mark Johnson began developing it while attending the Extended Program at Type@Cooper (Cooper Union, New York). Initially inspired by the science and futurism magazine OMNI (1978–1995), GORP evolved into a whimsical concept: a fictional typeface from the Galactic Order’s Republic of Print, created by a mythical designer named Jark Monsoon. According to its lore, humanity was meant to receive GORP during the Apollo 11 mission—but lacked the technology to install it at the time. Monsoon later contacted TrashType on Earth, who now brings the typeface to the world. This universe continues through the interactive game “GORP Adventures” (https://gorp.lol), where design meets storytelling.
